how it works

group.finance helps you manage expenses among your friends (or acquaintances), making it simple to keep track of day-to-day expenses or purchases on group trips.
When you pay for something that other people participated in, you add it as an expense.
  • Only the person who paid should add the expense.
  • When adding an expense, you can either split it with your acquaintances, or split it among a group that you're a member of.
  • To add other users as acquaintances, search for them in the search bar at the top of the page.
When someone else adds an expense that you're involved in, you will need to acknowledge (or "ack" it) to confirm that you agree with it.
  • This does not mean that you've paid the other person back for it yet; only that you agree that it's legitimate.
  • When someone else adds an expense that you're involved in (or sends you a message), you'll get an email notification. You can control the frequency of email notifications from the my profile page.
Create a group to make it easier to organize expenses for a group trip or with roommates.
  • You can see your groups or create new groups on the my groups page.
You can see your balances with other people on the my tabs page.
  • Click on a person there to see your full tab with them.
When you want to settle up with someone, go to their tab and click "resolve tab" to pay them back. If the other user has Venmo or Zelle, you'll see that there.
  • After you've settled up with another user, add a resolution on their group.finance tab to record that. Once the other person receives the payment, they can acknowledge (or "ack") the resolution to confirm that they received it.
  • If the other user uses Venmo, there will be a button under "resolve tab" on their tab to pay them back through Venmo and automatically record a resolution in group.finance.
    • This just opens the Venmo app with their username and amount owed pre-filled; group.finance itself has no access to your Venmo account.
  • You can set how you want others to pay you back (Venmo or Zelle) on the my profile page.
